“I can’t recommend Nickeel highly enough! I had been dealing with persistent pain in my left shoulder for quite a while, and nothing seemed to make a lasting difference. After several treatment sessions with Nickeel, using dry needling and manual therapy, my shoulder has now completely recovered. Not only is he highly skilled and knowledgeable, but he also has a great sense of humor that makes every session enjoyable and relaxing. He takes the time to understand the problem, explains the treatment clearly, and genuinely cares about helping his patients recover. If you’re struggling with pain or injuries, I would absolutely recommend Nickeel. Thank you for your professionalism, expertise, and making such a positive difference. Five stars well deserved!”

Patient Information

Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Patient Guide

General information only — not a substitute for individual medical or physiotherapy advice.

A diagnosis is about more than identifying where it hurts. Your physiotherapist will listen to your story, assess how you move and examine the affected area to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms. This helps us develop a treatment plan that's tailored to you—not just your injury. Why is understanding my condition important? Understanding what's causing your symptoms is often the first step towards recovery. We'll explain your diagnosis, what may be contributing to it and what you can do to support your recovery, so you can make informed decisions about your health.

Physiotherapy aims to do more than relieve pain. Our goal is to reduce symptoms, restore movement, improve strength and help you return to the activities that matter most to you. Treatment is always personalised to your goals and stage of recovery.

Exercise is one of the most effective treatments for many musculoskeletal conditions. Your exercises are chosen specifically for you to improve strength, mobility, balance or function. They are designed to support your recovery both during and after your physiotherapy treatment.

Recovery isn't always linear. If your progress is slower than expected, we'll reassess your condition, review your treatment plan and discuss whether further investigations or referral to another healthcare professional would be helpful. Our priority is ensuring you receive the right care.

Physiotherapy is appropriate for many musculoskeletal injuries and pain conditions, but it's not always the best option for every problem. If we believe another healthcare professional is better placed to manage your condition, we'll explain why and help guide you towards the most appropriate care.

Usually not. Remaining active within safe limits is often an important part of recovery. While some activities may need to be modified temporarily, we'll help you find safe ways to keep moving while your body heals.

Recovery is about more than pain levels. We'll monitor changes in your movement, strength, function and ability to do the activities that are important to you. Regular reviews help us ensure your treatment continues to meet your goals.

Yes. Recovery isn't just about treating your current problem—it's about reducing the likelihood of it returning. By improving strength, movement, flexibility and physical capacity, we aim to help you stay active and resilient in the long term.

While most musculoskeletal conditions are not serious, some symptoms require prompt medical assessment. Seek urgent medical care if you experience:

  • Sudden or severe weakness
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Significant numbness around the groin or saddle region
  • Unexplained fever with severe back or neck pain
  • Severe trauma or suspected fracture
  • Chest pain or difficulty breathing

If we identify any signs that suggest a more serious condition, we'll ensure you receive the appropriate referral without delay.

No. Most people can book directly with a physiotherapist without a referral. However, referrals may be required for some Medicare, WorkCover, CTP or Department of Veterans' Affairs claims.

Your first appointment is focused on understanding you—not just your symptoms. We'll take the time to discuss your history, understand how your condition affects your daily life, perform a thorough physical assessment and explain our findings in clear language. Together, we'll develop a personalised treatment plan based on your goals.

If you have X-rays, MRI or ultrasound results, please bring them along. While imaging can sometimes provide useful information, it doesn't always explain why you're experiencing pain. Your symptoms, examination findings and goals are often just as important when planning treatment.

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Depending on the area being assessed, shorts, loose-fitting pants or a singlet may be helpful.

Not always. Pain is your body's way of signalling that something needs attention, but it doesn't necessarily mean that tissues are seriously damaged. Many factors—including inflammation, previous injuries, stress, sleep and the nervous system—can influence how pain is experienced. Understanding your pain is often an important part of recovery.

Our goal is to help you become confident in managing your condition—not to keep you coming back indefinitely. Some people recover after only a few visits, while others benefit from longer-term rehabilitation depending on the nature of their condition. We'll discuss your expected recovery and review your progress together.

Treatment is tailored to your individual needs and may include:

  • Education and advice
  • Exercise rehabilitation
  • Manual therapy
  • Dry needling (where appropriate)
  • Strength and mobility programs
  • Return-to-sport or work planning
  • Shockwave therapy

We focus on treatments supported by current evidence and your personal goals.

Recovery varies from person to person. Your diagnosis, overall health, activity level and how long you've had your symptoms can all influence recovery. We'll provide realistic expectations and adjust your treatment as you progress.

Appropriate movement and exercise are often an important part of recovery. We'll guide you on what is safe, what to avoid and how to gradually return to your normal activities.

Improving strength, balance, flexibility, movement patterns and physical capacity can help reduce the risk of future injuries and support long-term health.
