Elbow pain can affect people of all ages and activity levels. It may develop suddenly following an injury or gradually due to repetitive movements, sport, work or everyday activities. Because many elbow conditions can cause similar symptoms, a thorough assessment is essential to identify the source of your pain and guide the most effective treatment.

Common causes

  • Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylalgia)Irritation of the tendons on the outside of the elbow, commonly caused by repetitive gripping, lifting or wrist movements.
  • Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylalgia)Irritation of the tendons on the inside of the elbow, often associated with repetitive gripping, throwing or lifting activities.
  • Biceps TendinopathyIrritation or degeneration of the biceps tendon at the front of the elbow, often causing pain with lifting, pulling or twisting movements.
  • Triceps TendinopathyIrritation or degeneration of the triceps tendon at the back of the elbow, commonly associated with pushing movements, weightlifting or repetitive loading.
  • Ligament SprainsStretching or tearing of the elbow ligaments following a fall, sporting injury or sudden force through the joint.
  • Elbow Bursitis (Olecranon Bursitis)Inflammation of the fluid filled sac on the tip of the elbow, causing pain, swelling and tenderness.
  • Cubital Tunnel SyndromeCompression or irritation of the nerve at the elbow, which may cause numbness, tingling or weakness in the ring and little fingers.
  • Elbow OsteoarthritisWear and tear of the elbow joint.
  • Throwing InjuriesOveruse injuries affecting the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the elbow, commonly seen in overhead and throwing sports.
  • Referred PainSometimes elbow pain originates from the neck or shoulder rather than the elbow itself.
