Hearing Loss
Age-related, noise-induced, or sudden hearing changes assessed and managed by an audiologist.
It is not uncommon for hearing loss to occur together with other ear symptoms, such as tinnitus or a blocked ear sensation. This page focuses on hearing loss as the main reason for seeking assessment.
Causes
There are many reasons why hearing loss can occur. Some of the more common causes include:
- Sudden hearing lossA sudden reduction or loss of hearing, particularly in one ear, can be a medical emergency. It may also be accompanied by new ringing in one ear (tinnitus), a blocked or full sensation in the ear, or dizziness, although these symptoms are not always present. If you experience a sudden change in your hearing, contact us immediately for an urgent hearing assessment. We will assess your hearing and advise you on the most appropriate next steps. Early medical treatment, ideally within 72 hours, offers the best chance of recovery.
- Ear wax build upExcess ear wax can block the ear canal and cause temporary hearing loss.
- Middle ear conditionsConditions affecting the middle ear, such as ear infections, fluid behind the eardrum or problems with the hearing bones, can affect hearing. If your hearing concerns are accompanied by ear pain, ear discharge or fever, prompt medical assessment by your GP is recommended, as treatment may be required.
- Age related hearing changesHearing gradually declines over time. Early signs may include difficulty following conversations in noisy places or hearing people who are not facing you or who speak quickly.
- Noise related hearing lossLong-term exposure to loud sounds (such as loud music, machinery or power tools) or a single very loud noise (such as a gunshot or explosion) can permanently damage your hearing.
- Other ear or hearing nerve conditionsLess commonly, hearing loss may be caused by conditions affecting the inner ear or hearing nerve.
Common symptoms
- Struggling to follow conversations
- Turning the TV up louder than others
- Missing parts of words
Assessment & treatment
During your appointment, our audiologists will perform a comprehensive hearing assessment to determine the type and degree of your hearing loss. The findings will help identify possible causes of your symptoms and guide the most appropriate management or referral pathway. Management may include hearing rehabilitation, hearing aids, ear wax removal, hearing protection advice or referral to your GP or an ENT specialist if further medical assessment is required.
