Hearing plays an important role in a child’s speech, language, learning and social development. If you have concerns about your child’s hearing, a hearing assessment can help determine whether hearing loss may be contributing.

When should I arrange a hearing assessment?

  • Has delayed speech or language development
  • Frequently asks for repetition or does not consistently respond when spoken to
  • Turns the television or other devices up louder than usual
  • Has difficulty hearing at school or in noisy environments
  • Has a history of recurrent ear infections or middle ear problems and there are concerns about their hearing
  • You, your child’s teacher or another healthcare professional have concerns about their hearing

Assessment & treatment

Our audiologists provide comprehensive hearing assessments for children aged 4 years and older. A hearing assessment can help determine whether hearing loss is present and whether it may be contributing to your child’s speech, language or learning concerns. The findings help guide the most appropriate management and any further referrals.

Depending on the results, recommendations may include monitoring hearing, referral to your GP or an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist, or referral to a speech pathologist where appropriate.
